In Bruson, in the heart of the Val de Bagnes, an old granary from the early 18th century, once used to store grain, has been converted into holiday homes. More than three centuries after its construction, the challenge was to come up with a design that would stand the test of time, just like the original building.
The project seeks to preserve the identity and historical substance of the building, while incorporating a contemporary design that is adapted to current requirements and open to the future. Located in the dense fabric of the old village, just a few meters from neighbouring buildings, the project meets today's standards while offering new openings to light and the landscape.
Drawing on the specific characteristics of the context, the project team turned these into opportunities. The interior layout is centred around a luminous core, designed as a hollowed-out mass of wood, where the simple volumes are sculpted by light. The programme was reinvented with a holiday feel in mind: compact rooms, inspired by ship cabins, give way to large common areas, conducive to sharing and friendship.
The project stands out for its deliberate use of contrasts: a futuristic box inserted into a historic setting; a smooth, bright, and abstract interior contrasting with a rough exterior, marked by time and clearly visible in its construction. This duality is also expressed in the construction method: a custom digital design, 90% prefabricated in the workshop, then assembled in less than a week. Finally, the local roots are affirmed by the use of sustainable materials sourced from the region.
Through this intervention, past and present coexist, inscribing this 1707 barn into a new history, faithful to its heritage and looking toward tomorrow.
