The renovation of the Contemporary Art Building (BAC) in Geneva has reached a key milestone with the installation of a crane at the center of the building.
Positioned in this location due to the site's limited space and dense urban context, the crane will be used to supply materials, remove and replace over 200 windows, and transport elements to each level.
This stage marks the transition from demolition to structural work, paving the way for the building's restoration and modernization.
The project includes a major decontamination and demolition phase, the restoration of the building envelope and the identical replacement of its windows, the modernization of technical systems, upgrades to meet fire safety and accessibility standards, the installation of a photovoltaic system, the reorganization of reception and exhibition spaces with new openings, and the implementation of modular, reusable partitions for optimal exhibition flexibility.
The City of Geneva – DPBA is leading the renovation of the Bâtiment d’Art Contemporain (BAC), an iconic venue housing MAMCO, the CAC, and the CPG on the historic site of the former SIP. Led by the Kuehn Malvezzi and CCHE consortium, the project aims to modernize and upgrade the building to current standards while preserving its heritage, enhancing existing materials, and strengthening its connection to the city.
The project is being carried out in close collaboration with the relevant departments of the City of Geneva and the Canton (OPS-SMS-CMNS heritage services).
Construction, which began in April 2025, will continue until the first quarter of 2029.
