Bringing an old building to life with a contemporary extension
The project reads like a musical stave where the horizontal lines carry the solids and voids, the windows and the walls like a musical score that would mix old and contemporary music. At the origin of the project, the owners wanted to extend the 4 flats of a small building from the thirties in order to move in. The building was preserved and renovated for sentimental reasons.
A contemporary extension was added to enlarge the 4 existing flats. The living rooms and kitchens are located in the extension, extended by a large balcony on the lake side, while the bedrooms occupy the old building. The link between the old and the new was managed by a joint made of "full" spaces, occupied by offices or vestibules, and "empty" spaces, such as a patio.
The old and the new are thus harmonised in a balanced duo.
